Aries

The beginning, the instinct to explore, and the journey towards individuality.

Aries is the first sign, the instinct to begin, reach and discover. Ruled by Mars, it acts before it thinks and learns by doing, and its journey is towards knowing who it is and being unafraid to show it.

The first sign: I am

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and I often think of it as a newborn entering the world for the very first time. Everything is new, everything is worth reaching for, and there is so much to discover. It hasn't yet learned to hesitate, to weigh every possibility, or to question whether it should act. It simply wants to experience.

This is the essence of Aries. Its instinct is to act first and think later, making decisions quickly and discovering the consequences along the way. Sometimes this works wonderfully; other times, it creates difficulties. But Aries learns through doing. It needs to experience things for itself rather than spend too much time wondering what might happen.

There is something beautifully uncomplicated about this instinct. Aries knows what it wants and isn't afraid to pursue it. It brings energy and momentum into a group, naturally stepping forward when something needs to be done. It enjoys its independence and prefers to find its own way rather than follow someone else's.

There can be a certain self-focused quality to Aries, much like a child who hasn't yet learned that they sometimes need to share or allow someone else to come first. When Aries wants something, its attention is often completely on that desire. It takes its feelings seriously in the moment and can act on them before considering anything else. But this is something that develops with experience. As Aries matures, it begins to understand that other people have their own needs and desires too. What initially comes naturally as putting itself first can gradually become a genuine ability to share, make room for others and even find enjoyment in letting someone else take the lead.

Aries is also associated with the head, reflecting its quick responses, immediate thoughts and impulsive nature. There is little separation between having an idea and acting on it. As we move further through the zodiac, Gemini introduces a more curious and questioning approach, where information is gathered, alternatives are considered and the mind begins to explore different possibilities.

Ruling planet: Mars

Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of drive, courage, energy and the will to fight for what it wants. Mars is at home in Aries, so its energy comes through undiluted: direct, physical and quick to act.

Mars is named after the Roman god of war and is associated with conflict, competition, courage and physical energy. I sometimes think of Aries as a soldier. Not necessarily someone looking for a fight, but someone who is prepared to get on with the job, face a challenge and do what needs to be done. There is a practical quality to this placement: Aries doesn't always need to discuss something at length before getting started. It would often rather take action and work things out along the way.

Mars represents both the pursuit of something and the defence of something. In Aries, this can be seen in the instinct to go after what it wants, but also in the willingness to stand up for itself and protect what matters. This is part of what makes Aries naturally courageous and determined.

This is also why Aries can make a good worker. It has an instinct for getting things moving, particularly when there is a clear objective. It can be direct, efficient and capable of taking on challenges without becoming overwhelmed by every obstacle. Mars gives Aries its fighting spirit, but that spirit can be expressed through work, sport, competition, protecting others or simply having the determination to see something through.

The Sun in Aries

In traditional astrology, the Sun is exalted in Aries. The Sun represents identity, vitality, self-expression and the development of individuality, making this an interesting connection.

Aries gives the Sun an environment in which its qualities can express themselves strongly. There is an emphasis on becoming someone in your own right, developing confidence in your decisions and learning to stand independently. This connects closely with the idea of Aries as the beginning of individual existence: discovering who you are and finding the confidence to express it.

The Sun's exaltation is one reason the themes of identity, courage and self-expression are so important when understanding Aries.

Element and modality: Cardinal Fire

Fire is the element of vitality, enthusiasm, instinct and the energy that brings something to life. It wants to engage with the world rather than simply observe it. There is an appetite for experience, movement and discovery.

As a fire sign, Aries expresses this energy in its most immediate form. It is enthusiastic, spontaneous and often eager to try something before knowing exactly how it will unfold. It benefits from having somewhere to direct this energy, whether through physical activity, sport, work or another pursuit that keeps it engaged. Without an outlet, restlessness and frustration can build.

As the cardinal fire sign, Aries doesn't simply carry fire's energy; it initiates with it. Cardinal signs mark beginnings, and Aries begins by moving. It is the spark that starts a cycle, rather than the flame that sustains it or the embers that remain when it is complete.

The house it rules: The 1st House

Aries naturally corresponds with the 1st house, the house of identity, appearance and the first impression: the self people encounter before you've said a word.

The connection between Aries and the 1st house reflects the beginning of individual existence. It is the instinct to occupy space, assert oneself and discover who one is through direct experience. The 1st house represents how we meet the world as individuals, and Aries carries that same instinct to establish itself and find its own way.

The developed and undeveloped expression

Like any sign, Aries has qualities that can express themselves very differently depending on a person's awareness and maturity. An underdeveloped expression can be impulsive, impatient, argumentative or overly concerned with getting its own way. It can react before considering the consequences, struggle to admit when it is wrong, or mistake being headstrong for always needing to have the final say.

A more developed Aries, however, learns to use these same qualities constructively. Impulsiveness becomes decisiveness. Stubbornness becomes conviction. The desire to lead becomes the ability to take initiative, organise others and get things done. Rather than reacting to every challenge, a more self-aware Aries knows when to act, when to stand its ground and when to recognise that someone else has a better idea.

Something I find interesting about Aries is that it can appear quite tough on the outside, but be much more sensitive than people realise. Its directness and ability to get on with things can give the impression that it isn't particularly affected by what happens around it. Yet behind that exterior, there can be a much softer emotional nature. I sometimes think of this as another reflection of the baby analogy: Aries may know how to act before it knows how to understand or communicate everything it feels. It can take time to learn how to approach its emotions, rather than simply react to them.

Aries in love

Aries is often drawn to the thrill of pursuit. There needs to be something to discover, someone who keeps them interested, and a sense that love is something to actively pursue rather than simply have handed to them. They can enjoy the anticipation, the uncertainty and the excitement of attraction. When everything comes too easily, the initial excitement can sometimes fade before a deeper connection has had the chance to develop.

When Aries falls for someone, however, their feelings can be surprisingly strong. They can develop an attachment quickly and throw themselves into a relationship with tremendous enthusiasm. Their loyalty can be fierce, and they may feel very protective of the person they love.

But there is a contradiction here. Aries can fall in love quickly and, at times, fall out of love just as quickly. What feels undeniable in one moment may be questioned in the next. This can make them difficult to understand from the outside and leave the other person uncertain about where they stand. They may break hearts without necessarily intending to, simply because their feelings can be so closely tied to what they experience in the moment.

Independence remains important, even when Aries is deeply attached. They want to love someone without losing the freedom to be themselves. They can be headstrong, with a strong preference for doing things their own way, and underneath the confident front there is a tender, protective side. When someone becomes important to them, the wish to hold on can be just as strong as the wish to pursue.

What Aries is becoming

Growing into individuality

I see the Sun sign as something we grow into. It isn't necessarily a description of who we already are from childhood, but rather an indication of qualities we are learning to develop and embody throughout life.

For Aries, this journey is about discovering and becoming comfortable with their own identity. They are learning to stand confidently as an individual, to recognise what makes them different and to take pride in who they are. Someone with an Aries Sun might not necessarily identify with these qualities when they are younger. They may take time to understand themselves, develop their independence and become comfortable expressing their individuality.

This brings us back to the image of the newborn. At first, Aries reaches for everything without thinking too far ahead. As it grows, it begins to understand itself in relation to the world and the people around it. The instinct to do things its own way gradually becomes genuine independence, and the impulse to take the lead develops into the confidence to guide others.

The challenge is learning that independence doesn't mean having to do everything alone, and that considering other people's perspectives doesn't take anything away from individuality. Aries is learning to trust its own mind, stand by its decisions and take initiative without needing permission or approval.

Ultimately, Aries is becoming someone who knows who they are, accepts that person and isn't afraid to let the world see it. The original spark remains, but with maturity comes a stronger sense of identity, emotional awareness and the confidence to lead a life that feels genuinely their own.
