Pisces

The dreamer, the compassionate soul, and the final journey between the material and spiritual worlds.

Pisces is the twelfth sign, the dreamer who feels deeply and senses what cannot be seen. Ruled by Jupiter and Neptune, it is imaginative, compassionate and open to everything around it, and its journey is towards holding on to that sensitivity while staying grounded in the world.

The twelfth sign: I believe

Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac. It follows Aquarius, which looks towards the wider world, questions established ways of living and considers what might be possible for humanity. Pisces takes us somewhere different. Its attention moves beyond the structures of the visible world and towards everything that cannot be so easily defined, explained or understood.

Symbolically, Pisces carries something of the experiences of all the signs that came before it. It has travelled through the entire zodiacal cycle, from the emergence of individual identity in Aries to the relationships, challenges, discoveries and transformations that follow. There is a sense of having been through many different aspects of human experience, even if that understanding is not always consciously recognised or expressed.

This is reflected in the symbol of Pisces: two fish swimming in opposite directions. I find this a particularly meaningful image because it represents two different currents within the sign. One moves towards the material world, towards the experiences of being human and everything that comes with it. The other moves towards the spiritual, the imaginative and the unseen.

These two directions can be expressed in very different ways. Some Pisces may be drawn towards spirituality, philosophy, art and the deeper questions of existence. Others may become completely absorbed in the material world or retreat into fantasy when life becomes difficult. The potential to experience both sides is there, but how that energy develops depends on the individual and the rest of their chart.

Pisces is often described as sensitive, compassionate and imaginative. It can be highly receptive to its surroundings, picking up on the moods and feelings of other people, sometimes without quite knowing where those feelings have come from. There is an openness to experiences that cannot always be explained through logic or visible evidence.

At its best, this can create a genuine capacity for understanding, empathy and creativity. But without boundaries, that same openness can become overwhelming. Pisces is learning how to experience the world deeply without losing its sense of self within it.

Ruling planets: Jupiter and Neptune

Pisces has two planetary rulers. Jupiter is its traditional ruler, while Neptune became its modern ruler following its discovery in 1846.

Jupiter represents expansion, belief, faith, philosophy and the search for meaning. In Pisces, this can express itself through a desire to understand something greater than the individual self. It may be drawn towards spirituality, religion, philosophy or the belief that life contains a deeper meaning beyond what we can immediately see.

Neptune adds another dimension. Named after the Roman god of the sea, it is associated with dreams, imagination, intuition, idealism and the dissolving of boundaries. Where Jupiter searches for meaning, Neptune takes us towards the experience of something that may be difficult to put into words.

Neptune is also the most distant of the eight recognised planets in our Solar System. Its discovery was particularly unusual because astronomers predicted its existence mathematically, after observing irregularities in Uranus's orbit, before it was confirmed through a telescope.

I find the symbolism of Neptune and the ocean particularly fitting for Pisces. Think of the deepest part of the sea, where sunlight cannot reach and very little can be seen. There is an entire world beneath the surface, but much of it remains hidden from us. Pisces has a similar relationship with the unseen: it can be interested in what lies beneath ordinary experience, what cannot easily be measured and what we may sense without being able to explain.

Neptune is also associated with illusion and escapism. This is an important distinction because the desire to move beyond ordinary reality can be expressed constructively through imagination, spirituality and creativity, or less constructively through avoidance and fantasy. The challenge is learning to recognise the difference between what is meaningful and what we simply wish were true.

Element and modality: Mutable Water

Pisces is a mutable water sign. Water signs experience the world through feeling, emotion and connection, while the mutable modality brings adaptability, movement and the ability to change.

Of the three water signs, Pisces is often understood as the most fluid. Cancer initiates emotional bonds and seeks belonging; Scorpio deepens emotional experience through intimacy, trust and transformation; Pisces allows feeling to move beyond the boundaries of the individual.

This can make Pisces particularly receptive to other people's experiences. It may be able to understand different perspectives without immediately judging them, or recognise emotions that someone else struggles to express. There can be a natural sensitivity to suffering, but also to beauty, joy and the quieter things that make life meaningful.

However, being receptive to everything around it can make it difficult to distinguish its own feelings from those of other people. Pisces may absorb an atmosphere without realising how much it is affecting it.

The developed expression is compassion with awareness: being able to understand and care for others without taking responsibility for every feeling or experience around it.

The house it rules: The 12th House

Pisces has a natural correspondence with the 12th house, which is associated with the unconscious, solitude, isolation, hidden matters, dreams, retreat and the parts of life that exist beyond ordinary awareness.

This is perhaps one of the most private areas of the birth chart. It can describe experiences that are difficult to articulate, things we keep to ourselves and patterns that operate beneath conscious understanding.

The connection between Pisces and the 12th house is particularly fitting because both are concerned with what lies beyond the visible and familiar world. There can be a need for solitude, time away from other people's expectations and space to process experiences internally.

The 12th house is also associated with retreat and escape. This can be expressed through creativity, meditation, spiritual practice or time spent in one's own company. But it can also describe avoidance, where someone withdraws from difficult experiences rather than finding a way to face them.

The 12th house is the natural house associated with Pisces, but the actual 12th house in an individual's birth chart is determined by their Ascendant and house system. It will not necessarily contain Pisces.

The developed and undeveloped expression

At its best, Pisces has a remarkable capacity for compassion, imagination and understanding. It can meet people where they are without immediately judging them, recognising that everyone carries experiences that may not be visible from the outside.

Its imagination can be a powerful creative resource. Pisces may find ways to express feelings through music, writing, painting, film or other art forms, giving shape to experiences that are difficult to communicate directly.

There can also be an interest in spirituality, symbolism and the mysteries of existence. Pisces may be drawn towards questions that don't have straightforward answers, or feel that there is more to life than what can be seen and measured.

However, the same sensitivity can become difficult when it has no boundaries.

An undeveloped expression of Pisces may struggle to separate its own emotions from those of other people. It can become overwhelmed by its surroundings, take on problems that do not belong to it or feel responsible for making everyone else feel better.

Escapism can also become a pattern. When reality feels too difficult, Pisces may retreat into fantasy, idealise people or situations, or avoid dealing with something that needs attention. Its imagination can become a place to hide rather than a way to understand the world.

There can also be a tendency to see what someone could become rather than what they are actually showing. Compassion is valuable, but it does not mean ignoring reality or allowing other people to repeatedly cross boundaries.

The challenge is not to become less sensitive. It is to develop enough awareness and grounding to understand what belongs to it, what belongs to someone else and when it is necessary to step back.

The karmic pattern

The recurring pattern Pisces carries is the tendency to lose itself in something outside its own boundaries.

This might be another person, a relationship, an ideal, a spiritual belief or an imagined version of how life could be. The desire to merge with something greater can be beautiful, but it can also make it difficult to maintain a clear sense of individual needs and limitations.

Pisces may give too much, avoid difficult conversations or convince itself that understanding someone's behaviour means having to accept it. It can sometimes become so focused on another person's suffering that it forgets its own.

There is also a tension between the two fish: one drawn towards the material world and the other towards the spiritual. Pisces may move between these directions, sometimes feeling deeply connected to something greater and at other times becoming lost in the distractions of ordinary life.

The lesson is learning that compassion does not require self-sacrifice, and that escaping reality is not the same as rising above it.

What Pisces is becoming

Pisces represents the closing of the zodiacal cycle. Symbolically, it carries the experiences of everything that came before it, bringing the journey of the individual towards its final point before a new beginning emerges in Aries.

There is something meaningful about this transition. Pisces represents the dissolution of the boundaries that separate us, while Aries represents the emergence of a new individual identity. One cycle comes to a close, and another begins.

The growth of Pisces is not about losing its sensitivity, imagination or connection to the unseen. It is about learning how to hold onto those qualities while remaining grounded in the world it lives in.

It can understand others without becoming responsible for their lives, love deeply without losing its individuality and explore spirituality without losing sight of reality.

Its greatest strength is the ability to recognise that life is bigger than any one person, while still understanding that each individual has their own place within it. The two fish may swim in different directions, but Pisces is learning how to understand both worlds without becoming lost between them.
